When a machine (PC of any sort) does that, it can indicate any of several things:
- Overheating, as others have mentioned, to wit:
- Bad — failing — power-supply
- Failing CPU fans
- A failed case fan
- A virus or other malware
- A motherboard with damaged electronics
- RAM failures (some chips on the RAM boards are failing)
- Loss of or slow and eventual failure of battery supplying the BIOS (Why do PCs still require a CMOS battery?)
- A failing CPU
- A failing video card.
- A “daughterboard” device, e.g., a NIC card, or a separate sound card that is shorting out
- A failing hard drive controller-card (the one built onto the HDD itself)
- ???????????
The virus/malware issue you can resolve by downloading and installing some antivirus software, or updating (manually) what you already have.
