The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a global standard used in the book industry to uniquely identify a book or a product intended for use as a book. The ISBN code can be found on the back cover, usually printed above the barcode. It consists of 10 or 13 digits.
To obtain a barcode, you can register with the Italian association GS1 Italy | Indicod-Ecr. They are the only organization in Italy authorized to issue GS1 or EAN barcodes for product identification.
Author publishers need to pay the following fees to purchase an ISBN code:
- €80 plus VAT for one code
- €150 plus VAT for two codes
- €220 plus VAT for three codes
By using an ISBN code, a title or edition can be identified immediately, unambiguously, and permanently. Your book will be included in the official catalog of published books in Italy, with the ISBN code and "Published by the author" in the "publisher" field.
The ISBN code consists of a 13-digit EAN code, with the first three digits indicating the book industry sector. The EAN system is adapted to the ISBN system through the opening of the ISBN 978 code.
ISBN refers to the International Standard Book Number. ISBN 13 is the new system, while ISBN 10 was the previous system. This is the most significant distinction between the two systems.
The Italian Publishers Association (AIE) is the only authority responsible for issuing ISBN codes. Both authors and publishers can request the issuance of the code.
An ISBN code consists of 13 digits. The identification number of the title can contain the same number of digits provided by the GS1 book world prefix, the language area prefix, the publisher prefix, and the preceding control number.
