Microsoft acknowledged these issues and fixed them with updates released around April 2025, specifically update KB5055523 for Windows 11 24H2 [1].

On May 27, 2025, Microsoft officially discontinued support and availability of the Remote Desktop app for Windows from the Microsoft Store. Users are required to transition to the new "Windows App" as a replacement. This new app offers improvements such as unified access to multiple Windows and cloud services (including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box), customizable home screens, multi-monitor support, dynamic display resolutions, enhanced remote work features like device redirection and Microsoft Teams optimizations [4] [5].

The older Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked from connecting to cloud services after May 27, 2025, and no longer supported for general use. Microsoft is also planning to phase out the Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI) starting March 27, 2026, pushing full migration to the Windows App [6].

Enabling Remote Desktop on Windows 11 or Windows Server remains similar to before: through system settings for allowing remote connections, configuring firewall rules, and optionally adding user access permissions. Best practices include keeping Network Level Authentication enabled for security [2] [3].

In summary, in 2025 Remote Desktop on Windows 11 and Server is fully usable but Microsoft is transitioning users from the classic Remote Desktop app toward a new Windows App starting May 2025, alongside fixing earlier RDP bugs introduced by security updates. For stable remote desktop usage in 2025, applying all Windows updates and moving to the new Windows App is recommended.

const sources = [[1,"https://borncity.com/win/2025/04/24/windows-11-24h2-server-2025-microsoft-fixes-remote-desktop-freezes-caused-by-feb-2025-update/","Microsoft fixes remote desktop freezes caused by Feb. 2025 update","[German]Users of Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 have been plagued by problems with remote desktop connections for months.
