How to force ownership of a drive in Windows 7

If you are the owner/administrator of the current OS, then you can take ownership of any installed drive.

This can be annoying.

Try this:

  • Right click on the drive.
  • Select the "Security" tab.
  • Click on the "Advanced" button.
  • Click on the "owner" tab.
  • Click on "edit".
  • Don't just select "Administrators", select your specific account name.
  • For added benefit, click back over to the "Permissions" tab.
  • Click "Change Permissions".
  • Click on the "Add..." button.
  • Click on the "Advanced" button.
  • Click on the "Find Now" button (this will reveal all the possible users and groups on your installation.
  • Scroll down until you see your name.
  • Select your name (make sure it's highlighted).
  • Select the "OK" button.
  • Your name will now appear in the field of the "Selct User or Group" window.
  • Select the "OK" button.
  • A window will appear with a bunch of permissions. Select "Allow" for all of them.
  • Select "OK".
  • You are now back at the "Advanced Security Settings for XXX (folder/drive)"
  • Make sure you select the "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" check box.
  • Click on "OK" and let the drive reset all the parent and child permissions on all folders and objects.

If that fails, then you can do this:

  • Control Panel
  • View "All Control Panel Items" (from the address bar, it's the arrow that points to the right, click on it.
  • Select "Administrative Tools".
  • Sotto l'opzione "Storage" dovrebbe esserci "Disk Management".
